Our hero is the frazzled and sleep-deprived Mary, a mother.<\/em><\/p>\n The hero of our play, a mother<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n GERTRUDE:<\/strong> Where is the mother?<\/p>\n BETTY:<\/strong> She has stopped to check in on the twins.<\/p>\n GWEN:<\/strong> Of messy diapers, cries, EMILY:<\/strong> It’s two to one; besides, Two-to-One<\/p><\/div>\n SALLY<\/strong>: May God help her! It is fearful odds. GWEN: <\/strong>Oh that she now had here MARY RETURNS COVERED IN BABY VOMIT<\/strong><\/p>\n MARY: <\/strong> Who is she that wishes so? Gwen? <\/p>\n The Best Love<\/p><\/div>\n I do not wish for one nap more!<\/a>
\nand tricks they have full three score thousand.<\/p>\n
\nthey never sleep
\nand she is awake with them the long night.<\/p>\n<\/a>
\nGod be with them, twin-parents all.
\nIt’s quite possible these kids will be the death of her.<\/p>\n
\nbut one of those relatives that do no work today!<\/p>\n
\nNo, my friend: If I am to lose my sleep,
\nI am troubled little by the night’s loss,
\nand if I maintain watch over these two lads,
\nthe greater my share of love and memories.
\nGod’s will! I tell you I wish for nothing more.
\nBy Jove, I do not covet money,
\nNor do I mind feeding them from my own body;
\nI think not of fancy garments to wear;
\nSuch things are far beyond my own desires:
\nBut if it be a sin to love my children,
\nI am the most offending soul alive.
\nNo, in faith, my friends, I wish not for sleep.
\nGod’s peace! I would not lose a single moment
\nthat one night of sleep more might take from me.
\nThese two are the best love I have.<\/p>\n<\/a>
\nRather proclaim it, Gwen, to all my friends,
\nThat she who cannot bear tough times,
\nLet her depart, with our blessing
\nand I’ll put a bus ticket into her purse:
\nWe would not cry in that woman’s company
\nThat fears her fellowship to cry with us.
\nThis day is called the Mother’s day.
\nShe that rocked her children and raised them
\nWill stand a tip-toe when this day is named,
\nAnd rouse herself as she is called “mother.”
\nShe that had children, when they age,
\nwill yearly on the day be visited by them,
\nAnd they will say, “Today is Mother’s Day”
\nAnd she will open her babybook and show her photos
\nAnd say “These children I still love on my mother’s day.”
\nOld age might forget and perhaps everyone shall be forgotten,
\nBut she will remember her children with their antics
\nWhat feats they did: then shall their names,
\nFamiliar in her mouth as cherished words
\nmy sons, my daughters, my babies,
\nBe in her glowing heart freshly remember’d.
\nSo many things shall the good mom teach her children,
\nAnd a mother’s day shall never go by,
\nFrom this day to the ending of the world,
\nBut we in it shall be remembered;
\nWe few, we happy few, we band of mothers;
\nFor she today that loses sleep with me
\nShall be my sister; be she covered in vomit, babyfood, or poo,
\nThis work makes her great:
\nAnd relatives where-so-ever they are who are now in bed
\nShall think themselves accursed they were not here,
\nAnd hold their lives cheap whiles any mother speaks
\nThat saw their baby’s smile on mother’s day.<\/p>\n
